Leading Without Loudness: Jourdan Smith’s Quiet Confidence Recognized as a J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week

By Levi Lee

On January 9, 2026, students, teachers, families, and community partners gathered at Central Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas to celebrate an outstanding young leader—Jourdan Smith, a 7th-grader whose calm confidence, artistic talent, and quiet courage earned her the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award.

The weekly award, presented by The Jegna Klub, celebrates young people who exemplify the values of Justice, Empowerment, Growth, Nurturing, and Advocacy, recognizing not just academic or extracurricular accomplishments, but character, resilience, and influence in their community.

A Moment of Recognition

The ceremony was filled with applause, pride, and support. Over 25 classmates, friends, teachers, and family members attended to witness the moment Jourdan’s hard work was honored. “All of the wonderful people there to support her” was what stood out most to Jourdan’s nominator, Counselor Jessica Short, as she reflected on the energy in the room.

“Jourdan embodies so many wonderful attributes,” Ms. Short shared. “She is respectful toward her teachers, classmates, and everyone she approaches. Though reserved and quiet, she radiates a calm, loving energy.”

Her courage was clear to those who know her best. Recently, Jourdan performed a solo monologue in her theater class—a challenge many students shy away from—but she embraced it with poise. Even when peers laughed, she persevered.

“Anyone else would have been too embarrassed, but she persevered and went outside of her comfort zone,” Ms. Short said, describing the moment that helped define her nomination.

Jourdan’s achievements also include winning 1st place in a debate competition, showcasing both her intellectual skill and her ability to communicate with clarity and confidence.

What the Award Stands For

The J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award was established to spotlight young people who are making a positive impact in their schools by demonstrating excellence in academics, behavior, leadership, and attendance—and by being a positive influence among their peers. Each week, one student from kindergarten through college is selected based on these criteria and is honored in a presentation that shines a light on their unique strengths.

“I think this recognition promotes self-confidence,” Jourdan said thoughtfully, highlighting how meaningful the moment was.

In her case, that confidence was visible the moment she stepped forward. According to Award Coordinator Keyron “Coach Keyz” Kimbrough, Jourdan’s initial shyness gave way to a proud smile as she embraced her recognition.

“I noticed how she was very shy, but when she started to receive her awards and her praises, a glimmer of proudness was displayed on her face,” Coach Keyz said.

Community Support and Celebration

This award is truly a community celebration. In attendance were educators, community partners, community members, school administrators, and supporters who join The Jegna Klub in uplifting young leaders. The sense of impact was echoed by those in attendance.

“Keep doing what you’re doing!” Jessica Short said when asked what could make future award presentations even more impactful—a simple but powerful endorsement of the program’s value.

More Than an Award—A Launchpad for Growth

Jourdan and her nominator also received special gifts as part of The Jegna Klub’s mission to support academic and economic empowerment, thanks to generous community partners. These included:

Keeping the Momentum Going

As Jourdan continues her journey through middle school and beyond, her example stands as an inspiring reminder of what young people can achieve when their talents, courage, and effort are seen, celebrated, and supported.

“Most kids wouldn’t have pushed through what she did,” said Ms. Short. “But Jourdan did—and that’s something worth honoring.”

Congrats again to Jourdan Smith, an exemplary student whose leadership, creativity, and quiet determination remind us that the brightest lights often shine from within.
