Excellence Beyond the Box Score: Scholar-Athlete Jaxon Davis Named J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week at Sumner Academy

By Levi Lee

On January 29, 2026, the hallways of Sumner Academy of Arts & Sciences in Kansas City, Kansas were filled with pride, surprise, and celebration as Jaxon Deon Davis, a 12th-grade scholar-athlete, was honored as the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week.

The weekly award, created by The Jegna Klub, recognizes students who embody the core values of Justice, Empowerment, Growth, Nurturing, and Advocacy—not just through academic performance or athletic skill, but through character, leadership, and positive influence within their school community.

For Jaxon, the moment was meaningful in more ways than one.

“What stood out the most was my friends congratulating me and the staff in my school,” Jaxon shared after the presentation. “It really meant a lot.”

Excellence On and Off the Court

Jaxon maintains a 3.0+ GPA while averaging 23 points per game on the basketball court—an achievement that reflects discipline, balance, and dedication. But those numbers only tell part of the story.

Nominated by Albert “Coach Al” Collins, Sumner’s Head Basketball Coach, Jaxon was described as someone who consistently puts the team and his future first.

“Jaxon truly puts in the work—both on the court and in the classroom,” Coach Al said. “Sometimes he’s almost too unselfish, making sure his teammates shine. But when it’s time, he knows how to take control.”

That quiet leadership was on full display during the presentation, which—despite being held in a hallway—quickly turned into a moment of unity when Jaxon’s teammates were given passes to attend.

“I was glad to present it to him at school,” Coach Al added. “Moments like this remind students that their effort is being seen.”

A Celebration with Purpose

Led by J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award Coordinator Keyron “Coach Keyz” Kimbrough and presented by The Honorable Judge Tony Martinez, the focus of the ceremony remained on celebrating the student while reinforcing long-term empowerment.

“Even though we had to do the presentation in the hallway, seeing all of his basketball teammates show up made it special,” Coach Keyz shared. “That’s positive reinforcement in real time.”

During the ceremony, Jaxon received:

  • The official J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award

  • A Student of the Week T-shirt (courtesy of the KCK Schools Foundation for Excellence)

This holistic approach is intentional. As the program emphasizes, the award is not just about recognition—it’s about preparing students and families for economic independence.

“This recognition promotes being grateful for opportunities you’re given,” Jaxon said, “and taking advantage of them.”

A Moment Affirmed by School Leadership

For Sumner Academy’s administration and staff, the presentation reinforced the importance of affirming students in real time.

“It was great to see Jaxon being surprised and honored,” said Rick Malone, Principal of Sumner Academy. “Recognition is important to reaffirm the values we want to see in our students as we build a successful future society.”

Athletic Director Andrew Wright echoed that sentiment, noting the professionalism and impact of the experience.

“The presentation was professionally done, and everyone involved made it a great experience,” Wright shared. “It definitely promotes self-confidence and peer respect.”

Athletic Secretary Sherlice Wesson highlighted one detail that resonated deeply. “Including his teammates in the picture stood out to me,” she said. “That moment alone is motivating.”
