Kansas City, Kan. — In a celebration of student leadership, character, and academic excellence, eighth grader Fabio Ramirez-Ferrera of Gloria Willis Middle School was honored as the recipient of the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award.

The recognition, presented by The Jegna Klub, highlights students across Wyandotte County who exemplify the core values of Justice, Empowerment, Growth, Nurturing, and Advocacy — collectively known as J.E.G.N.A.
Fabio’s teacher, Shelby Thomas, who nominated him for the award, described him as “the kind of student every teacher hopes to have,” citing his strong academic performance, leadership, and positive influence among peers. “Fabio consistently demonstrates a positive attitude, strong character, and academic excellence both in and out of the classroom,” Thomas said, noting his high GPA and commitment to continuous improvement.

The award presentation, attended by classmates, family members, school staff, and community partners, brought together more than two dozen supporters to recognize Fabio’s achievements. Smiles and applause filled the room as Fabio received his award and shared the moment with those who have supported his journey.
For Fabio, the experience was both humbling and motivating. His calm demeanor and confidence stood out during the ceremony, reinforcing the very qualities that earned him the recognition. According to award presenter Tony Martinez, Fabio displayed “the confidence of a young man twice his age,” adding that he was “polite, engaged, and genuinely interested in his future.” Martinez emphasized that Fabio represents “exactly the kind of forward-looking scholar the Student of the Week is meant to highlight.”

Fabio’s parents, who were present for the ceremony, described the moment as deeply meaningful. His mother, Diana Ferrera, reflected simply but powerfully: “Everything stood out,” she said, noting the emotional impact of seeing her son recognized. His father, José Ramirez, pointed to the strong reaction from family members as a defining moment, underscoring the pride felt throughout the room. Both parents agreed the recognition builds “self-confidence,” a quality they see growing in their son.

The event also highlighted the broader purpose of the award. Beyond recognition, the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week initiative aims to empower students and families through access to financial literacy and economic resources. Fabio and his nominating teacher received educational investment tools, including stock gift cards and financial literacy materials, designed to encourage long-term economic independence.
“This award is more than a celebration — it’s a launchpad,” said award coordinator Keyron “Keyz” Kimbrough. He noted that the program intentionally connects recognition with opportunity, giving students and families access to workshops and resources that extend beyond the classroom. Kimbrough also shared a lighthearted moment from the day, when the presentation had to be restarted due to a recording mishap. “The students thought it was funny, and it brought even more energy into the room,” he said, emphasizing the importance of capturing both formal and authentic moments.

Thomas said one of the most memorable aspects of the event was the visible support among students. “I enjoyed seeing the smiling faces of the other students during the presentation,” she said. “The support for a peer was evident.” She added that the award “honors the positive aspects of our students rather than focusing on negatives,” calling it a powerful form of encouragement and reinforcement.
Community-Powered Impact
The program continues to grow through strong community collaboration and partnerships. These partners help provide awards, financial literacy resources, celebration materials, and invaluable encouragement that support students like Fabio in reaching their potential. A special THANK YOU to:
