At the Jegna Klub, recognition is more than a moment—it’s a movement. Rooted in the values of Justice, Empowerment, Growth, Nurturing, and Advocacy, the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award exists to spotlight young leaders who are quietly—and powerfully—shaping their schools and communities.
In February, that spotlight shined brightly on Rickie “RJ” Hudson Jr., a senior at F.L. Schlagle High School in the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools.

A Recognition Rooted in Purpose
The award presentation followed the signature Jegna Klub experience—intentional, structured, and deeply meaningful. From the moment the team arrived on campus to the final applause, every step was designed to ensure RJ felt seen, valued, and empowered.
As Award Coordinator Coach Keyz opened the ceremony, the message was clear:
this recognition is about more than grades—it’s about character, leadership, and impact. RJ’s reaction captured the heart of the moment. Reflecting on the experience he shared, “What stood out today is getting an award for the things that I didn’t realize that people noticed.”
That quiet realization—being recognized for who you are when no one is watching—is exactly what the award stands for.
Excellence Recognized by Those Who See It Daily
RJ was nominated by his teacher, Brandon Nickerson, who described him as a student who consistently goes beyond expectations. In his nomination, Mr. Nickerson highlighted RJ’s “dedication, responsibility, and commitment to excellence,” noting his ability to balance academics, extracurriculars, and community involvement with maturity and focus.
But beyond the written words, it was the moment itself that stayed with him most. As he reflected afterward, he said, “Seeing the joy on Rickie’s face as he was praised and acknowledged for his hard work… that’s what stood out.” He also emphasized the broader impact of the program saying, “I believe this recognition promotes leadership and provides motivation to students to keep being great well rounded scholars.”

A Presence That Speaks Without Words
Award presenter Judge Tony Martinez offered a powerful perspective on RJ’s character—one that went beyond accolades.
He described RJ as having a “quiet, dignified demeanor,” noting how he carried himself with respect and composure throughout the ceremony. “A prime example of what a young man should act like in this kind of setting,” Judge Martinez shared. He also pointed to the visible bond between RJ and his mother, recognizing the role of strong family support, “Obviously with a strong parent and child bond, Rickie will be a success in whatever he does.”

That sentiment was echoed by RJ’s mother, Rosette Scover, who proudly highlighted his achievements, “RJ has earned a full ride to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, tuition paid for Lincoln University, and $47,000 from Langston University, while ranking as the second highest Black male student at Schlagle and earning the Wyandotte County KCK District Attorney Office MLK Scholarship. Her words summed it up best, “He has done such a wonderful job and this award celebrates him at his core.”

This is where recognition meets real opportunity—turning celebration into a pathway toward economic empowerment. As RJ put it simply when asked what the award promotes, “Motivation.”

For the Jegna Klub team, this moment carried even deeper meaning. RJ is not just an award recipient—he’s also been connected to the program as an intern. Coordinator Keyron Kimbrough reflected, “RJ being a Jegna Klub intern made this an awesome experience.” That full-circle journey—from participant to honoree—represents the true mission of the organization: building leaders from within the community.
