Inside the halls of Grant Elementary School, something powerful unfolded—an unforgettable moment that captured the true spirit of youth empowerment, recognition, and transformation. The J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award, presented in partnership with the Kansas City Kansas School Foundation for Excellence & Eastside Innovation, once again delivered on its mission: to celebrate students who embody Justice, Empowerment, Growth, Nurturing, and Advocacy. This honoree, 5th grader Amerrio Carter-Collins, didn’t just receive an award—he experienced a moment that may shape his future.

“I saw my mom and thought I was in trouble,” Amerrio shared with a smile. “I couldn’t believe I got an award.” That raw, honest reaction captured the heart of the program. What began as confusion quickly transformed into joy, pride, and a sense of accomplishment that filled the room.

A Recognition Rooted in Growth

The J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award is designed to honor more than just grades—it recognizes students who demonstrate perseverance, leadership, and positive influence within their school community. Each presentation follows a structured and meaningful process, ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and celebrated. For Amerrio, this recognition was especially significant.

Nominated by his teachers Charles “CJ” Smiley and Allison Patterson, Amerrio’s journey is one of determination and transformation. As highlighted during the presentation by Judge Tony Martinez, Amerrio entered the school year facing challenges with focus and confidence. But instead of remaining stuck, he made a choice—to grow. “He has shown tremendous growth, effort, and leadership this school year,” CJ Smiley noted. “His progress reflects hard work, perseverance, and a true commitment to becoming a better student and person.”

That growth didn’t go unnoticed. From improved academic performance in reading, writing, and math to becoming more respectful, responsible, and self-aware, Amerrio has emerged as a role model among his peers.

A Moment That Meant Everything

The award presentation itself was intentionally designed to be more than ceremonial—it was an experience. From the moment Award Coordinator Keyron Kimbrough opened with the organization’s mission, to the powerful words delivered by Judge Martinez, every step reinforced the importance of recognizing youth excellence.

And when Amerrio opened his award box, the room lit up. “Allison Patterson reflected on that moment, saying, “The shock on Amerrio’s face… it felt meaningful to him to be recognized.” CJ Smiley echoed that sentiment, “Everyone was engaged and very proud of Amerrio.”

Judge Martinez captured it best, describing Amerrio as “beaming and full of pride,” adding that the moment felt like “a life changer” and proof that “positive feedback helps young people realize they can achieve.”

Even beyond the student, the impact extended to family and community. Coordinator Keyron Kimbrough noted that what stood out most was “how excited his family was—especially his mother.” For Amerrio, the moment was one he wanted to hold onto. “I am super happy and want to take pictures with all my family and friends to remember this.”

More Than an Award — A Launchpad

What makes the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Award unique is its commitment to long-term impact. Alongside the recognition, Amerrio and his nominating teacher received tools for financial literacy and economic empowerment, including:

* Stock investment gift cards

* From Teen to Millionaire A Guide for Young Investors eBooks

* Invitations to the Economic Independence Academy workshops

This holistic approach ensures that the celebration extends beyond the moment—equipping both students and their support systems with resources to build brighter futures.

As one attendee noted in the exit feedback, the program is “extremely strong” in influencing students, particularly by increasing motivation and self-confidence—two traits Amerrio now clearly embodies.

Community-Powered Impact

This award is made possible through strong community partnerships. These partners help provide awards, financial literacy resources, celebration materials, and invaluable encouragement that support students like Amerrio in reaching their potential. A special THANK YOU to:
