On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the bright, early morning atmosphere at Grant Elementary School shifted from routine to remarkable as Dr. Jarius Jones joined Ms. McCommon’s Kindergarten classroom as the featured reader for The Jegna Klub’s signature Breakfast & Books Program. Twenty-one enthusiastic students gathered for breakfast, books, and a memorable — and meaningful — reading experience.

A Program Built for Impact
The Breakfast & Books initiative offers elementary students — grades K-5 — the opportunity to engage with community and professional adult role models through a relaxed breakfast setting, followed by a dynamic read-aloud and discussion. According to The Jegna Klub, the program aims to “shift students’ mindsets about reading” and connect them with positive adults who model reading, curiosity, and career possibilities. Dr. Jones selected the charming book Nosey Rosie, and dove in with the kindergartners, guiding them through voices, questions, and thoughtful pauses.
Student Engagement in Action
Of the 21 students present, 16 spoke up—either by asking questions, sharing their thoughts, or reciting words and phrases from the story. “Students were very attentive and engaged,” noted Dr. Jones, recognizing that several young scholars articulated words and ideas beyond typical expectation. A touching moment came when one student accidentally spilled cereal, and fellow classmates helped clean up the mess—an unplanned but beautiful expression of kindness and community in action.

Classroom teacher Ms. McCommon echoed the sentiment, noting how multiple children who usually struggle to speak up did so during the reading, inspired perhaps by Dr. Jones’ style and presence.
A Moment That Will Stick
One moment that stood out to Dr. Jones: as he closed the book, several students sat quietly with wide eyes, absorbing not just the ending of a story but the broader message of curiosity and courage it carried. Meanwhile in the background, they remembered the cereal-spill lesson: “helping each other counts,” one little voice whispered. These small but significant moments embodied the deeper purpose of Breakfast & Books: helping students build not only reading skills, but confidence and a sense of belonging.

Why This Matters
Research shared by The Jegna Klub highlights the benefits of positive adult role models in literacy and life outcomes. For example, the U.S. Department of Education finds that such influence can improve students’ chances of graduating, avoid risky behaviors, and develop stronger academic habits. By inviting Dr. Jones into the Kindergarten classroom, the program did more than read a book—it opened a door to possibility. The children experienced a trusted adult reading alongside them, asked questions, felt seen, and linked words on a page to ideas about who they might become.
Building Networks of Support
Dr. Jones’ participation also reinforces The Jegna Klub’s broader mission: to construct a network of coaching, literacy, and empowerment in partnership with schools like Grant Elementary. As noted in a previous Breakfast & Books post, the program has become a weekly tradition at Grant, offering students a fresh way to engage with their reading while meeting community professionals. For Ms. McCommon’s students, the event reaffirmed what the classroom already practices: routine, respectful engagement, and the joy of learning together. The difference? A guest reader who connected story time to lifelong value.

Looking Ahead
As these young scholars return to their next reading adventure, they do so with a memorable experience added to their journey—a breakfast table full of conversation, a book whose pages held more than words, and 16 voices nudged into speaking up. The ripple effect is real: confidence grows, relationships deepen, and reading ceases to be just a task—it becomes a connection.
The Jegna Klub invites more community professionals, business leaders, creatives and educators to join the Breakfast & Books initiative. Together we can continue shaping young minds, fostering reading joy, and building networks of success—one breakfast, one book, one conversation at a time.
