When the doors of Jegna Klub Headquarters opened the room filled with more than cameras, microphones, and youth interns preparing for airtime—it filled with legacy. Former KC Keys President and community leader Harrell Johnson, a Kansas City community icon, arrived alongside LaToya Johnson, his daughter and the current President of the Kansas City Keys Community Council. Together, they didn’t just sit for an interview—they stepped into a space designed to let youth lead the narrative, share wisdom across generations, and model what purpose matched with preparation looks like in real time. This wouldn't just be an interview—it would be a full-circle moment of legacy, leadership, and learning.
For over 50 years, the KC Keys Community Council has stood as a pillar in Kansas City—developing young athletes into leaders and strengthening the fabric of the community. That legacy was embodied in Harrell Johnson, whose presence still commands respect across generations.
A Space That Feels Like Home
Before the cameras rolled, LaToya Johnson said she arrived feeling excited, eager to learn more about the intern‑driven program and to see the space firsthand. That excitement quickly turned into something deeper. “I felt blessed to be a part of the experience,” she shared afterward, noting she was impressed not only by the professional setup but by the interns’ command of media production.
Learning the reach of JegnaTalk and JEGNAFEST Worldwide Radio, she said, “was impressive.” That sense of community was tangible throughout the building. “The people,” LaToya reflected when asked about her favorite part of the visit. “It was great community with a beautiful passion to serve.”
Harrell Johnson, whose journey with KC Keys spans nearly five decades, echoed that spirit. Coming into the interview excited about the opportunity, he later described the experience simply as “grand.” For him, the day felt like a lifetime of service coming full circle—“total résumé explained,” he added, smiling.
Youth Leading the Conversation
Lead interviewer Zahdai Watson stepped into his role confident, prepared, and grounded in prior knowledge of the KC Keys. That preparation paid off. “I had a great time,” he said afterward, surprised by just how many children the organization has helped over the years. What stood out most was the chemistry—not only with the guests, but among the interns themselves. “We set the tone and our guests feed off our energy,” Zahdai shared, describing the experience as motivating. “People really do care about my success.”

Co‑interviewer Payton Towers came in calm but cautious, worried about making mistakes. By the end, those nerves had transformed into confidence. “After, I felt good because I did better than I thought I would,” he said. Listening to the stories—Harrell’s long history of impact and LaToya’s own athletic and leadership journey—made the moment feel unexpectedly amazing.

Behind the scenes, tech support intern Lyric Kimbrough experienced her own shift. Nervous at first, she found herself surprised by the guests’ deep basketball experience and wisdom. Her takeaway was simple but powerful: keep pushing.
A Living Example of Jegna
Jegna Klub Founder & CEO Moses “Coach Mo” Wyatt described the visit as a special day rooted in history and mutual respect. “Harrell was my first up‑close and personal look at a real‑life Jegna,” Coach Mo shared, referencing the African concept of a protector and nurturer of the community. “To see his daughter LaToya now taking over as President is even more inspiring and motivating for me and the legacy I hope to leave.”
That legacy is visible in the interns themselves—youth learning how to ask questions, operate equipment, engage respectfully, and tell stories that matter. Coach Keyron Kimbrough noted he was most impressed by the endeavors of both guests and the way the interns rose to the moment, learning how to engage and respect community leaders.
Promoting 50 Years of Excellence: The KC Keys Gala
The visit also served as a platform to uplift an important milestone. In 2026, KC Keys celebrates 50 years of service to Kansas City—five decades of mentoring, coaching, educating, and building community through sports and scholarship. That legacy will be honored at the upcoming KC KEYS Gala: “Keep Excellence in Your Sight.”
For 50 years, the Kansas City Keys Community Council has been unlocking opportunity right here in Kansas City—mentoring, educating, and empowering inner‑city youth through sports, leadership, and service.
From the court to the classroom, KC Keys has impacted thousands of young athletes, shaping leaders, graduates, and difference‑makers. Now, they celebrate five decades of excellence at the KC KEYS Gala — “Keep Excellence in Your Sight.”

Legacy in Motion
As the interns powered down equipment and the Johnsons prepared to leave, one thing was clear: this wasn’t just an interview. It was a moment where history met hope, where wisdom was passed without gatekeeping, and where young voices were trusted to carry the weight of real stories. LaToya summed it up best with one word: “Impressive.” Not because of the cameras—but because of the opportunity being placed in young hands, early enough to change futures. And that, at its core, is what both Jegna Klub and KC Keys have always been about.

What happened inside Jegna Klub Headquarters wasn’t just content—it was connection.
A father who built a legacy.
A daughter continuing it.
A room full of youth preparing to carry it forward.
And somewhere in between, microphones captured more than voices—they captured purpose. Because when stories like these are told by youth, for youth, something powerful happens:
The next generation doesn’t just hear the legacy…
They become it.
