On October 2, 2025, the Alumni Room at Wyandotte High School filled with pride as Carlos Gonzales, a senior with big dreams and an even bigger heart for justice, was celebrated as the J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week. This honor, rooted in the values of Justice, Empowerment, Growth, Nurturing, and Advocacy, recognizes students who lead with purpose and inspire their communities.

Carlos is more than a student-athlete. With a 4.0 GPA, he balances academics and basketball while pursuing his aspiration to become a lawyer. His vision of one day practicing law is already taking shape: Carlos has been appointed as a youth court judge, where he guides his peers through restorative justice processes with fairness and integrity.
That commitment to justice made it especially meaningful that The Honorable Judge Tony Martinez presented the award.
“Carlos embodies the qualities of a leader who not only excels academically and athletically but also gives back through advocacy,” Judge Martinez said. “His role as a youth court judge is remarkable, and his dream of becoming a lawyer reflects both his discipline and his heart for justice.”

The Power of Recognition
Carlos’s nomination came from his basketball coach, Anthony Spencer II, who highlighted his player’s character and leadership both on and off the court. Spencer described the pride in Carlos’s eyes during the ceremony:
“What stood out was how proud my student athlete was to win this award. He almost started crying because of how happy he was.”
The moment also inspired other students.
“One of my students watching the award presentation told me he now wants to try to become a Student of the Week himself. This recognition promotes confidence,” Spencer added.

Award Coordinator Keyron Kimbrough praised the ceremony’s atmosphere:
“The Alumni Room was a great setting for the presentation. This award promotes positive reinforcement in students.”
Motivation for the Future
Judge Martinez also noted Carlos’s determination to seek mentorship as he pursues law:
“This student told me he will contact myself and others to help him understand the educational process so he can achieve his goal of becoming a lawyer. Motivation and self-confidence—this award promotes both.”

More Than a Celebration
As part of the presentation, Carlos received gifts designed not only to celebrate his accomplishments but also to invest in his future. These included anofficial J.E.G.N.A. Klub Student of the Week Tshirt, gift card from Merc Co+op, free drink coupons from Sonic Drive-In, a meal at The Big Fish Bar & Grill, a Stockpile Any Stock gift card and a From Teen to Millionaire: A Guide For Uoung Investors by Chris Dunlap of Nu Wall Street. He and his coach were also invited to the Economic Independence Academy workshop brought to you in part by Eastside Innovation, to further develop skills in financial literacy, investing, and economic empowerment.
